Number sense and maths starts in the home

It is exciting for parents to hear their children recite numbers 1 - 10, but they actually understand what these numbers mean in terms of quantity?

Creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush says number sense is acquired through normal everyday life experiences like counting objects or games that will provide a personal experience of quantity instead of theory.

Number sense is a feeling for numbers and an awareness about number and the knowledge of their value, says Bush.

Nikki Bush - Parenting expert

Bush says play time plays an important role in developing confidence in children for understanding what these numbers are all about.

What is important for young children is that they must feel the objects through the tactile sense (sense of touch) in order for numbers to have meaning.
