AmaXhosa King set to file interdict against 'Inxeba' screening

AmaXhosa King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu has ordered his lawyers to file an interdict against the screening of the controversial film Inxeba (The Wound).

Inxeba has been receiving a lot of backlash on social media, with threats of violence levelled against actors and makers of the film.

King Sigcawu has also written to the Eastern Cape Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina and the Film and Publication Board to try and stop the screening of the film across the country.

Heritage specialist Somadoda Fikeni says the Xhosa royal may be successful, depending on his political power.

If the King is ignored, there may be some tensions down the line.

Fikeni says there needs to be a more nuanced approach when expressing cultural practices.

It's balancing some of the sacred customs, which have their own sensitivities, while allowing the freedom of expression and creation by those in the artistic world.
