Duduzane Zuma set to appear in court on culpable homicide charges

Duduzane Zuma is set to appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Thursday on two counts of culpable homicide.

The former president’s son collided with a taxi on the M1 highway in 2014 which led to the deaths of Phumzile Dube and Nanki Mashaba.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had initially declined to prosecute Zuma, citing insufficient evidence, it later reviewed the case after AfriForum’s private prosecutions unit announced its intention to pursue the matter.

Karima Brown spoke to Head of AfriForum’s private prosecutions unit, Adv Gerrie Nel to get details on the case.

He says the NPA had not communicated its initial decision with the Dube family.

The first time I read that the NPA took a decision not to prosecute was in the Gupta leaks. What is interesting is on that specific day they informed Mr Duduzane Zuma. Up until today the NPA has not consulted with the Dube family.

A magistrate made the finding that the death was caused by the negligence of Mr Zuma, in spite of that, the NPA decided not to prosecute. Nothing has happened, there has been no further investigation, it is exactly the same case. There is only two things that has changed - we applied for a nolle prosequi certificate and there is a new political dispensation.
