Military & defence analyst Helmoed Heitman gives analysis on reports that SA averted a coup.

The City Press has reported that South Africa narrowly averted a rebellion by soldiers loyal to former president Jacob Zuma on the eve of his forced resignation earlier in the year.

Military & defence analyst at Jane’s Defence Weekly Helmoed Heitman says there are issues in the defence force but he doubts such a thing could be possible.

When we had the integration of the forces after 1994 a lot of them were very politicised. They came out of the guerilla movement. That's inevitable.

Helmoed Heitman, Military & Defence analyst at Jane’s Defence Weekly

But the people I know today have become professionals and they view politicians as very negative and I don't think they would want to get involved in politics.

Helmoed Heitman, Military & Defence analyst at Jane’s Defence Weekly

Heitman says the SANDF is not politicised and SA is not on the verge of a coup.

I don't think we are on the verge of a coup and I don't if anyone wanted to try that it would work.

Helmoed Heitman, Military & Defence analyst at Jane’s Defence Weekly

Listen to why Heitman thinks a coup will not work...
